I just spent a fabulous weekend with a group of women who are also mixed media artists and it was very good for me. Gathering with others to celebrate - whether it’s milestones, holidays, a community . . . is one of the most emotionally and spiritually restorative things we can do. We gathered to celebrate a shared love of creating with papers, paints, stamps, inks, stencils, gelatos . . . all the fun materials and mediums that contribute to the visual language of art journaling and mixed media collage. Instagram has been a game changer in our ability to meet like-minded souls, but it can’t really compete with the connectivity possible in physical presence. A small group of us get together fairly regularly, but many attendees had never met, at least not in person. But with art being an emotion-based process that’s essentially about communication, we arrived well-primed for sharing and connection. With the group focused on simple self expression (not, say, acquiring the technical skill to paint a photo-realistic still life) there’s no performance pressure, no measuring up. We’re free to celebrate the playful joy of the creative practice.
