August — I’m a commited (compulsive?) list maker. This tendency goes into overdrive twice a year: early January and the end of August — thanks to a lifetime of “back to school” preparations. This year my youngest is a senior in high school and the practice feels especially weighted. There are all the important tasks to check off the lists, and so many milestones to note. I’m trying to balance making sure it all gets done with keeping her center-stage, the one who’s really driving. And underneath it all are both a sense of urgency — and a little reluctance. This is the beginning of the last year. We have to get her ready, ready, ready, so that, in the end, she’ll be ready to go. If we do everything right, she’ll leave. Exactly like she’s supposed to. Her beginning will also be an end — mostly for us, her parents. Am I ready for that? I’m so excited for her, but I know that “the end” part of the equation will hit me hard. As the girls have gotten older, I’ve moved my personal goals and plans up a little on the priority list. I’ve been trying to bring my own dreams more fully into focus. A year from now I want to be well positioned to not just feel the end, but all the new beginnings. So out come the notepads and pens (yes, I’m old-fashioned); it’s definitely time to make some lists.
