March — I’ve been working away on artist trading cards for my 100 Day Project. I purposely chose this tiny substrate because I didn’t think it would involve a huge investment of time and energy. But it turns out, these little cards are consuming the bulk of my studio time. It’s addicting to me, pulling disparate things together to make something new. I love finding an interesting scrap of paper and matching it up with other papers, bits of fabric, a little paint, or an ink drawing to create a small but complete piece. So much so, that I’m a good six days ahead in the project and have joined an artist trading card swap with other card creators around the world. As you can probably tell by the name, artist trading cards were originally conceived of as something to be traded between artists, not sold. A House of Books (an online store that’s a treasure house for fans of old books and ephemera) organized this exchange. Composition might be my favorite part of the creative process. The 100 Days Project and a fairly open calendar in March have given me plenty of opportunity for exercising my creative composition muscle, so naturally the ideas have been free flowing. But going forward I won’t have quite as much time for cards and will be composing on a much larger scale. I’ve been looking for a vendor space where I can display and sell art with up-cycled furnishings, vintage decor and other hand made items. This will allow me to create vignettes that compliment the look and theme of the artwork, while clearing out my attic a bit. A space became available at Peak Boutique in Rolesville (across the street from the cottage chic mecca — Suzanna’s Antiques) and I’m moving in on the 31st! I found this out yesterday, I move in next Friday. I have one week to pull a (granted, small) booth together. Good thing I’m ahead of the count for that 100 Day Project. My booth space will be named The Muse and the Magpie, same as my Etsy shop. Next month I’ll have pictures of the space to share.
