February — The 100 Day Project began this month. It’s an online daily creative challenge with the overarching purpose of getting people to create on a daily basis. The idea is that participants (it’s predominantly visual artists, but any kind of creative endeavor counts) set a goal — to complete a project within the time frame, to do 100 of something, etc. As I stated in January, my goal is to make 100 mixed media collages. Completing 100 small (but 100!) individual works in as many days is truly an Art Challenge. One of the ways I’ve tried to make it easier for myself is to work in themes. Focusing on a single subject, pulling together all the materials I can find that in some way speak to that subject, and then experimenting with different ways to combine them meaningfully allows me to create multiple unique pieces in one batch. This was I have several pieces completed before needing to come up with a new idea. So far I’ve worked in the themes of hearts, elephants, the beach/Sanibel and I’m currently exploring the colors of February turning into March here in North Carolina. Speaking of Sanibel, I spent a lovely week there before Presidents Day — I got to enjoy some great weather in one of my favorite places, visit with my cousin Kathryn, and drop in on my parents’ very busy lives. And, as always, I found endless inspiration and time to soak it up. I hope you’ve had or have a chance to get away this winter/spring. So you’ve been watching the news, I’m sure. This latest tragedy, though taking place far away, touches a nerve for me. I visited the Soviet Union in 1986 as a 15-year-old on a high school trip. I didn’t get to Kyiv but I remember Odessa — a pretty, tree-lined city on the Black Sea, and the young people our group spent an evening with, the way they so definitely wanted us to understand — “We are not Russian, we are Ukrainian.” Peace.
