January 29 - The year is just beginning and already it feels precarious. We all know what’s going on in our country, in the world. And I know many of us feel it as a constant tension— a pull toward dark places in the mind and fear of what’s to come. So there’s that, I’m also facing down what is going to be a hugely transitional year in my personal life. I’m calling this “the year of The Relocation Project”. This project involves building two new spaces (not yet a house), prepping a house to sell, moving in stages to a temporary home, some very mixed feelings and a to-do list so long it’s broken down into categories and sub categories. Meanwhile, Matt is in the midst of a job change. Basically I feel like I’m wobbling about in some kind of uncertainty jelly, reaching for things to grasp on to. Maybe you know that feeling? In such times, what do we have? I, like many other people, find lists helpful in navigating life’s rough terrain. I will be making many, many lists this year. And I’m still a believer in doing a little recalibrating in the New Year — maybe not setting resolutions, but at least getting clear on intentions. This year I intend to honor, come what may, the practices that most sustain me. For me, these include regular exercise (especially yoga), prayer, gathering with people I’m close to, and making art. I’ve come to recognize “making” as a centering force to my sense of self — keeping me connected to who I’ve been, who I am, and who I hope to be. I have no specific goals on projects to accomplish, just the aim to regularly keep at it. Which may simply be sketching, art journaling and working down the long list of online classes I’ve already purchased.
