When I have to be driving around town at night in December I sometimes go out of my way just to drive by a house with pretty Christmas lights. Purposely taking a little more time, just to soak up the small pleasures of the season, seems to help me fend off the constant urge to rush. I’m reminded that Advent is meant to be a time for stillness, for waiting, and doesn’t December fly by fast enough? I’d like to linger longer in the anticipation, rather than hurry, hurry and suddenly find it’s all over. Relishing the sweetness also make it easier to swallow the bitter — this will be our first Christmas in ten years without our sweet girl, Izzie, and the second without my Dad. And to recognize that while it’s impossible not to feel and acknowledge what’s missing, there’s greater tribute to happy memories in carrying on with the tradition of joy. So over the next week I’ll be sitting down with a cup of coffee in front of my Christmas tree at least a couple of times a day just to bask in its beauty and light.
